Take Off!

The Massachusetts Corporation for Educational Telecommunications' (MCET) Take Off! project offers teachers a chance to hook students on math and science through exciting work in aviation.

Take Off! offers an aviation science curriculum presented via multiple technologies: live, interactive video broadcasting, written curriculum materials, and Internet activities. Teachers may choose to participate in the broadcasts and/or Internet activities.

The aim of the program, according to its founders, is to create projects that inform students about aviation and aeronautics, both as an academic focus and a career path. Known as Aeronautics and Aviation Science Careers and Opportunities (AASCO), the project reaches students nationwide.

From the Take Off! homepage, teachers and students can click and choose from a variety of educational materials, including:

Broadcast. Experts in the aviation field join the studio hosts to discuss career opportunities and other interesting subjects. Find out what topics are being discussed and when the next live broadcast is scheduled.

Activities. This Take Off! section is chock-full of fun, educational aviation science activities and is divided into three separate levels for elementary, middle, and high school students.

History. Follow the "Aviation Timeline" from the myths of ancient Greeks to the latest Boeing 777, or meet "Notable People in Aviation" in this exciting section.

Glossary. Confused about aviation lingo? No need to worry, as this alphabetized list looks at the meanings behind the words.

Career Cards. Air traffic controllers, mechanics, and engineers. Airline service representatives and pilots. The aviation field offers hundreds of career opportunities. Find one that's right for you here!

Forum. Exchange thoughts and ideas about all aspects of the Take Off! project in this public arena. Educators can exchange ideas for utilizing resources, students can discuss questions about aviation, and everyone is welcome to provide feedback about Take Off! and its contents.
